Hatiness Updateiness

Sorry about the post title - I've been watching way too much My Drunk Kitchen.

I'm working on a list of my suggestions for better choices of erotic fiction than Fifty Shades of Grey RIGHT NOW (I toyed with the idea of just writing a post that only suggested "anything else", which is funny but not particularly helpful), which I hope to have up for you this evening or tomorrow at the latest. To tide you over until then, please enjoy this marvelous video from reader Robyn, where she makes Siri read my review aloud, despite the fact that Siri can't say "motherfucker" AT ALL.

Also, thanks for the offers of e-mailing me the pdf version of the book for H-Town to read. I really would like to find an actual copy for her so she knows what part I'm complaining about when I say things like "Page 37. WTF JUST HAPPENED? PLEASE KILL ME." but you are all kinds of awesome for wanting to help out.

I have the best readers in the world.

I just spent all afternoon reading your 50SOG review posts, and they are indeed hilarious :D

Regarding the erotic fiction, my girlfriend likes to read it (usually on the fantasy end of things, i.e. vampires, dudes from Atlantis, demons, that sort of thing), and I don't think she's yet had the pleasure *cough* of 50SOG.

I have read a couple of these books and honestly I found them pretty terrible, but I don't want to judge all erotic fiction based on what might be an anomalously bad sample, so I'm interested to know what you'd recommend.

I've also not really had much of an interest in BDSM, but reading your 50SOG review has got me somewhat curious – it's something I've never understood, that bothers me. From what I've read here, I get the impression that it's something one is more or less born interested in. Is that the case?

Sorry, this comment is turning into quite the impressive length. I'll stop now.

Hi Andy!

I can really only comment on my own experience and that of people I'm friends with, but for me, yes, I have always been interested in BDSM since before I even knew what it was. Friends tell me they started discovering an interest in it around puberty. I'm not sure it's something you can teach another person to like any more than you can teach someone to like asparagus. My roommate tried that on me last week, but it was awful so I told him he could keep his "pee sticks" and then made myself a bowl of ice cream. That's beside the point, really. It's ok if you don't understand it yourself. What important is that you know what kind of things turn YOU on, and to make sure you're getting plenty of those things.

Hi,
Loving your posts on 50 shades which I discovered and read yesterday.
I cant wait for your discussions on 50 Darker, but I would urge you not to even try 50 Freed as I think you may rip your own head off in horror. I suppose you could wear some sort of helmet?....

I've been devouring your June posts in the past couple days and referring friends who mentioned on facebook they're reading 50 Shades. I'll be posting next week on my blog that I recommend reading your blog instead of the book! I blog at www.mereader.wordpress.com

This is kind of strange, but there actually is a semi-decent Twilight fanfic that deals with D/s: The Submissive by tara sue me on fanfiction.net. I don't know how 50 Shades is the one that got a book contract and The Submissive didn't. It deals with consent a lot better, and the sentence-level writing is a step up, though not amazing. Tara sue me actually did some research into BDSM; she does perpetuate some stereotypes about people who are into it being "damaged" but not as bad as 50 Shades, and because she's aware of it she makes a point of discussing that issue.

Another book with good erotica in it is the Outlander series by Diana Gabaldon. The plot:sex ratio in this one is HEAVILY weighted to plot, as you can tell when you pick up these doorstoppers. I've enjoyed them though. Historical fiction/time travel/romance/thriller.

Sounds interesting, MJTC, I will have to check that out when I'm done reading things that are fantastically stupid.

Anonymous - I'll have to look into the helmet thing, since at this point I'm going to have to read Freed or risk getting clubbed over the head with it by all my readers when I'm in the UK this September. So, helmet would be a good investment either way really.

Dumpthemuvtherfuookaokay I love Siri

And your reviews - telling everyone to lose an afternoon reading them rather than the actual books

No really, i retract the helmet idea. I made it to page 300 out of 580ish, and had to check myself in to the local lunatic asylum. Please, you have so much to give... Save yourself... Whilst you still can... RUN I tells ya RUN.

Apologies if someone's already posted this, but read this in (British daily newspaper) "The Guardian" today and thought of you!

From the local lunatic.....
I finished Freed, its not so bad if you can get past page 300..., its nice in the Asylum anyway, they let me write with crayons, and I quite like the jacket that gives you a hug.
Just going to sit quietly muttering now.....good point well made.......good point well made.....good point well made....
